Tegorocznym laureatem został Belg Philippe Gilbert.W plebiscycie zorganizowanym wśród dziennikarzy zajmujących się kolarstwem 29-letni Belg uzyskał 89 punktów. Wyprzedził triumfatora Tour de France Australijczyka Cadela Evansa 73 i mistrza świata w wyścigu ze startu wspólnego Brytyjczyka Marka Cavendisha 54 .
Gilbert odniósł w tym roku 18 zwycięstw, w tym trzy w prestiżowych klasykach: Amstel Gold Race, Liege-Bastogne-Liege i Strzała Walońska. Wygrał również jeden z etapów Tour de France.

Przed rokiem laureatem " Złotego Roweru" , który po raz pierwszy przyznano w 1992 roku, był Szwajcar Fabian Cancellara. Pięciokrotnie w plebiscycie triumfował Amerykanin Lance Armstrong, a trzy razy Hiszpan Alberto Contador.
